Together with the Pint Please community, we designed a beer called Keisari & Pint Please India Pale Lager, and throughout September it’s widely available, not just in our brewery shop but also in S Group and Kesko stores nationwide. In designing the beer, we made use of the millions of beer ratings found on Pint Please!
Pint Please, a Finnish-made app, lets beer lovers log and rate the beers they’ve tasted. Pint Please has over 200,000 beers and more than 5 million beer ratings in its database. So we got access to some very interesting consumer data, and based on it we chose the beer’s style, malts, hops and flavour profile.
India Pale Lager, or IPL, is a rising style both here and abroad. Over the past 12 months, IPL has repeatedly ranked among the three best-rated styles for several months and has steadily climbed the list of most popular styles. So there wasn’t much need to deliberate over the style for the new collaboration beer. The new beer’s recipe was built by comparing the best-rated IPLs, the hopping and malts used in them, and their flavour profiles in broad terms.
India Pale Lager (IPL) resembles India Pale Ale (IPA) in style, but the biggest difference is that IPL is fermented with a bottom-fermenting yeast instead of a top-fermenting one, and the hopping is more restrained. The goal was to create an easy-drinking beer that would suit Finns both after the sauna and at the dinner table.
In addition to data, traditional consumer feedback was also used in designing the beer. A prototype version of the beer was sampled at the Suuret Oluet – Pienet Panimot festival, where interested visitors got to share their opinions. The recipe was adjusted based on the verbal feedback given by consumers. The end result is exactly what you’d expect from an IPL, and what was aimed for in the process: a dry-hopped, citrusy, fresh and flavourful lager.
Cheers once again to the whole Pint Please crew for an interesting and great collaboration!
